The living conditions of the riparian population of the Bulolero Forest Reserve in the territory of Idjwi in South Kivu / DRC constitute a permanent threat to the endemic subspecies of blue monkeys (Cercopithecus mitis schoutedeni). To contribute to the conservation activities in Bulolero, Primate Expertise (PEx) launched an environmental education program for young schoolchildren at the Kisheke Primary School on 27 September 2016.
The aim of this mobilization is to stimulate interest among young schoolchildren in the conservation of biodiversity, so that later they can take leadership in the research and conservation of primates threatened in their environment.

Bulolero is characterized by a degraded environment. The tracks that wind through the hills that are generally bare-fire are damaged by erosions that carry soil and deplete the soil with agricultural yields that are becoming weaker. The population is poor and faces many challenges on a daily basis: lack of adequate water and food, difficult access to primary health care and education (especially for girls), unrestrained exploitation of forest resources threatens The few fragments of the forests still existing in the neighborhood of Bulolero. Indeed, large areas of forest, once rich in biodiversity, are mown and converted into areas for agriculture and subsistence farming.

Three griots from Kabare, a neighboring island of Idjwi, were invited to this awareness campaign. The theme of the awareness campaign was « the interaction between the lives of humans and animals ». Through tales of the relationship between animals and humans, these talented griots have engaged in exciting cultural exchange activities between the Bashi (people of Kabare) and the Bahavu (people of Idjwi) who marked the day at Satisfaction of schoolchildren and their masters. Several young schoolboys declaimed poems about the life of animals and embellished with the tales said and sung by the griots invited for the occasion.

In order to ensure the continuity of school activities in the field of nature conservation, with the support of PEx, the school authorities have set up a « Friends of Nature » children’s club set up within the school and Which will be animated by the pupils themselves with the supervision of the head teacher. Schoolchildren have demonstrated their talents in the making of poles using local materials made of banana sheaths. These pockets are very useful in reforestation of school environments and surroundings because they are used to keep young seedlings of tree species after germination in nurseries.

Decreasing the pressure of the surrounding populations on the nature reserve requires a second activity of attraction to allow the latter to remember their need. Primate Expertise proposed to the population of Bulolero to bee beekeeping as an alternative generating activity. A demonstration of the manufacture of the hive in a traditional way was carried out by the visit. On this occasion the head of the village of Kisheke Mr. Biragi Felix Kahula expressed his interest and reiterated his commitment in the continuity of the conservation activities by the reforestation of the degraded areas and the intensification of the awareness. For the Executive Director of the « inaction of men of goodwill lets occasionally triumph ».
